HA2 Task 10 – Review

Write an evaluation of your project. Use your plan, production log and blog posts to identify the strengths and weaknesses of your design process. This is best carried out by producing a conclusion to the design process evidenced in your blog. Try to establish whether or not your finished product has achieved the aim of the project.

Remember that you are trying to create computer game graphics and apply project management techniques to direct a project, to a technical quality that reflects near-professional standards following industry practice, showing creativity and flair and working independently to professional expectations.

Task 10: Review

Within these tasks I produced work ideas/assets for a game called Mekka Hornet Rebuild. The first 5 tasks were about resource gathering and idea generation. We thought of our own version of this game, we were essentialy create a resource pack which changed the games appearance and basic story. I think that I did ok in the writing department although there is obvious room for improvement, I could of added more detail in all of my writing pieces as they isn’t that much writing. I gathered enough pictures and inspiration alongside the ideas and I had the idea of a Wasp game instead of a Robot Hornet. I gathered pictures of various wasps, cartoon and life like.

From the pictures used for inspiration we had to create mock up images of our Player Character, Boss and typelogo. The Type logo while simple does the job and has the theme of a wasp. The player character had many different parts from different cartoon wasps and the boss was the same but with different parts and some jewelry as he is the King Wasp. I think I did well on both of these as I think that they look good and I was confident doing these mock ups. After creating the mock ups we then had to trace over them using Adobe Illustrator, this process took a little bit of time but I think that It was worth it as I think that these pieces were the best thing to come out of this project. I think that I did well on both tasks 6 and 7.

Tasks 8/9 are based on Pixel Art that would be used in the game. For task 8 we had to take the assets used in the game and used those ratios to create our own pixel art that is relevant to our game idea. I think that I did well in this task also as I enjoyed doing it and it shows how I improved as I went along. I could of spent more time on each one to create a better overall product but now I know how much time it takes for the next time that I create pixel art. There isn’t much to say about the presentation as it is just putting our images of the pixels in their place on a Photoshop document.

Overall I think that I did a lot better then the previous project but I still have a long way to go to get the highest marks that I can, I still need to improve on my time management and I know I can do it as it omproved near the end of this project.

HA2 Task 09 – Pixel Presentation

Present your completed pixel artwork assets on your blog in Jpeg format and upload the original Png versions to Moodle as a compressed Zipped folder.

Ensure that you have included all aspects of your working processes within your blog posts. This production log will need to include explanatory notes, imagery and screen-shots from the software and any other processes you are using.

Remember that you are trying to create computer game graphics and apply project management techniques to direct a project, to a technical quality that reflects near-professional standards following industry practice, showing creativity and flair and working independently to professional expectations.

These are all of my sprites that i created using Piscal. i used the pre-existing sprites as a template for my own sprites.

HA2 Task 08 – Pixel Production

Re-work and simplify your vector artwork into pixel artwork assets using the supplied templates from the Mekka Hornet prototype. You may choose to use a range of software applications to create your assets.
Ensure that you have included all aspects of your working processes within your blog posts. This production log will need to include explanatory notes, imagery and screen-shots from the software and any other processes you are using.

HA2 Task 07 – Vector Presentation

Present your completed vector artwork as a series of four promotional T-shirts. Publish these to your blog in Jpeg format and upload vector PDF versions to Moodle.

Ensure that you have included all aspects of your working processes within your blog posts. This production log will need to include explanatory notes, imagery and screen-shots from the software and any other processes you are using.

HA2 Task 06 – Vector Production

Based on your planning, use Adobe Photoshop to create raster mock-ups of your game’s typelogo, player and boss character. The aspect ratio you use is for you to choose, but make sure that the resolution of your imagery is clear enough to work from when tracing.

Following this, trace your raster artwork of the game’s typelogo, player and boss character using Adobe Illustrator.

I created raster mock ups of my Player and my boss characters in Photoshop and then I transferred the files into illustrator and then traced over them to create vector art.

This is the raster mock up of the player character.

this is the raster mock up of the boss character.

Both of these mock ups use different parts of different images and them brought together to create a finished product.

I created these experimental typelogos for my game. I used different masking techniques to create the wasp type effect. I like the top one better then the bottom one and I think it looks better and it is easier on the eyes.

HA2 Task 05 – Planning

Write up a brief but clear synopsis of your game. Treat this as if you are producing the blurb that appears within a trailer. Illustrate this with imagery if it helps to communicate your idea, BUT cite any sources you have used in your research.

Produce a design pack to help in the production your artwork. This will include any reference imagery you may have found (remember to cite sources) or created yourself, either hand-drawn or photographed.

Synopsis:

Stinger Assault is a Bullet Hell Shoot Em’ Up game where you take control of the strongest wasp in you colony to fight off the invading wasp army from another wasp colony. It’s your job to fight through the onslaught of different wasps to reach the leader of the opposing sides force, the Wasp Queen.

HA2 Task 04 – Ideas Generation

Produce an ideas map that explores the name, environment, player, enemies and boss characters for the game.

For my take on Mekka Hornet Rebuild I had the idea of using Cartoon Graphics for it to appeal to a larger audience. I think that the environment/setting could be a garden that is under attack from another colony of Wasps and the main character has to defeat the Queen in order to scare them away. I think that the player would take inspiration from this Wasp.

You would shoot your stinger and power ups would mutate you so you shoot stingers faster and in more directions. The enemies would be other wasps with variations from attack patterns to amount of health. There could also be hives where lots of weaker wasps emerge from. The boss Character could be a Queen Wasp with its own variation of the Hives on it. The name could be “Stinger Assault”. I could take the idea from other SHMUP games where smaller ships/beings follow you and shoot along side you until you get hit, these could be smaller wasps.
